The Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test (UMAT) is an aptitude test that forms a core component of selection into a number of health courses. It is not designed to test your knowledge, instead it aims to examine your reasoning skills, problem solving, and you ability to understand people. The test exists to determine your suitability as a future healthcare practitioner.
A number of courses require high marks in the UMAT for entry. These include medicine, optometry, dentistry, physiotherapy and pharmacy.
The UMAT is made up of three sections:
Section 1 tests critical thinking and problem solving skills. It contains 44 questions which must be completed in 65 minutes. Common questions include drawing conclusions from information, determining true and false statements, and various complex problems.
Section 2 tests your ability to interact with others. It contains 40 questions which must be completed in 50 minutes. Questions commonly involve being given a scenario and determining how a person would feel.
Section 3 tests non-verbal reasoning skills. It contains 38 questions which must be completed in 50 minutes. The questions generally involve sequences of figures, or determining which shape is missing from a grid.
The UMAT is very different to any other test that you have taken. Often, students who achieve high marks in school may be disappointed with their results. However, like any other test it is possible to study for it and become proficient in the various question types.
The UMAT is run by the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER) and will be held on the 28th July, 2010. Entry for the test opens in early April, and the final date for registration is June 4th.
